Deilephila elpenor is known as the Elephant Hawk-moth.
 
The larva is about 75 millimeters (3.0 in) long, green and brown in color. Like most hawk moth caterpillars, they have a backward curving spine or "horn" on the final abdominal segment.

This encounter make my day!

It is somehow difficult to find caterpillars now. I can remember, as a Kid I could find so many of them and of different species. Now they become rare in north Europe.

I think we should stop to tread every little creature as vermin and fight them with plant protection pesticide.
Otherwise, one day we won’t be able to enjoy the beauty of moths or butterflies anymore.
